Celebrate July 4th – Nashi Pear Day – with a Toast to Japan’s Most Refreshing Fruit

Did you know July 4th is Nashi Pear Day in Japan?

This special day was established in 2004 by the “Togo Town Nijisseiki Pear Development Committee” in Tottori Prefecture—one of Japan’s most celebrated pear-growing regions. The date is no coincidence: it’s a clever play on words, as the numbers 7 (pronounced na) and 4 (shi) sound just like “nashi,” the Japanese word for pear.

A Fruit with Deep Roots in Japanese Culture

Nashi pears have been part of Japan’s agricultural heritage for over 2,000 years. Traces of edible pear seeds dating back to the Yayoi period have been unearthed in ancient ruins in Shizuoka, marking the pear as one of the oldest cultivated fruits in the country.

Unlike the soft, buttery texture of Western pears, Japanese nashi are crisp, round, and as juicy as a cold glass of water. With a remarkable 90% water content, they’re a staple of the Japanese summer—enjoyed chilled, they offer a sweet and refreshing way to beat the heat.

Raise Your Glass to Rien Nashi Liqueur

There’s no better way to honor Nashi Pear Day than with a glass of Rien Nashi Liqueur—a refined, fruit-forward liqueur made from 100% premium Hita nashi pears.

Grown in the pristine basin area of Hita, Oita Prefecture—where dramatic temperature swings between day and night intensify the fruit’s flavor—these pears are carefully selected and transformed by the expert hands of Oimatsu Shuzo, a respected local brewery.

But there’s more than craftsmanship behind this bottle—there’s passion.

World champion bartender Takahisa Koda, a native of Hita City, poured his heart into the creation of Rien Nashi. Known for crafting cocktails that celebrate Japan’s natural bounty, Koda had a dream:

“I want to make the world’s best cocktail using Hita pears.”

That dream took shape in the form of Rien Nashi Liqueur—a harmonious blend of artistry, terroir, and innovation.

How to Enjoy

  • On the rocks – to savor the pure pear flavor

  • With soda – for a crisp, effervescent highball

  • In cocktails – as a base for refreshing summer mixes

Whether you’re a cocktail connoisseur or just discovering Japanese fruit liqueurs, Rien Nashi is your gateway to a one-of-a-kind taste experience.
