It's cheap, it's long-lasting, and it's convenient. Canned food can be found in supermarkets throughout the world and it ranges from fish and meat to vegetables and fruit. However, Japan has taken canned food to a whole new level. You can find pretty much everything in canned form: fried chicken (yakitori), wild animal meat, sushi and even classic dishes such as nikujaga shrunk down to can size. It should also come as little surprise then that one of the latest crazes to hit the Japanese foodie scene is gourmet canned foods.

October 10 is "Canned Food Day" designated by the Japan Canners Association to commemorate the completion of Japan's first canning factory (Ishikari Cannery in Hokkaido) by the Meiji government in 1877. On October 10 of that year, canned salmon was first produced from salmon caught in the Ishikari River, and mass production of canned salmon began in earnest, which led to the establishment of Canned Food Day to commemorate this event.

10月10日是日本罐头工业协会指定的“罐头食品日”,以纪念明治政府于1877年建成的日本第一家罐头工厂(北海道石卡里罐头工厂)。当年10月10日,首次使用石狩河捕捞的三文鱼生产出了三文鱼罐头,并正式开始批量生产。为纪念这一件事而设立了“罐头食品日”。

One of the most common canned items in Japan is fish. Despite the abundance of tuna, salmon, and other species, mackerel has recently taken center stage. You can find countless versions of it on the shelves today since it was rediscovered as a healthy food a few years ago. The most common flavors are plain, soy sauce, and boiled in miso.
