Back in 2016, Ise Kadoya Brewery teamed up with Culmination Brewing Company from Portland, Oregon, to create something extraordinary. By blending their original yeasts, the two breweries introduced Japan to the New England IPA (NEIPA)—a style revered for its juicy, fruity aroma, smooth mouthfeel, and low bitterness. This wasn’t just another beer; it was a pioneering brew that set a new benchmark for the craft beer scene in Japan.

A Tribute to Brewery Cats and Friendship🐱💛

The name “Neko Nihiki” (Two Cats) and its charming label design pay homage to the historic role of brewery cats, who once protected precious malt from rodents. But there’s more to it—both President Suzuki of Ise Kadoya and the president of Culmination Brewing share a deep love for cats, making this beer a symbol of friendship, tradition, and innovation.

From Sacred Trees to World-Class Brewing🌳🍻

This isn’t the first time Ise Kadoya and Culmination Brewing have created magic together. In the past, President Suzuki traveled with his team to Portland, bringing along KADOYA1 yeast, isolated from the sap of a sacred shrine tree. The result was the Japan-U.S. collaborative sour ale, "Amaterasu," which was widely praised for its exceptional depth and character.

But this time, the tables turned. Culmination Brewing’s team, including owner Tomas Sluiter, traveled to Japan, working side by side with Ise Kadoya brewers to craft Neko Nihiki—a beer that would go on to become a favorite among beer connoisseurs.
