Introducing Mone: Sake From the Heart of Akita
Mone – Pure Rice Sake by Akita Meisho Brewery
Akita Meisho Brewery has embarked on a groundbreaking journey to craft a sake that embodies the heart and soul of Akita. Their mission? To create a sake that is truly one-of-a-kind, born from the land, water, and traditions of their home. To achieve this, they started where it all begins—the rice fields.
The result is Mone, the brewery’s first pure rice sake made entirely from rice cultivated in their own fields, tended to with care by their passionate team from seed to bottle.
Situated in the picturesque Yawata district of Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, the brewery’s rice fields thrive in a land known as the “Nada of Tohoku.” With the nutrient-rich waters of the Omono River and a stunning view of Mount Chokai, the area is famed for its ideal conditions for sake rice cultivation.
Faced with the challenges of an aging farming community and a shortage of successors, Akita Meisho Brewery took action—not only to craft exceptional sake but also to revitalize Yuzawa’s reputation as Akita’s “Home of Sake Rice.”
The Art of Mone: Sake From the Heart of Akita
Mone is not just sake; it’s the culmination of Akita Meisho Brewery’s dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability. Every grain of rice is lovingly nurtured, with the team overseeing every step of the process: seedling cultivation, planting, harvesting, husking, and brewing. This hands-on approach ensures a sake that is deeply rooted in the land it comes from.
Two outstanding Akita-grown sake rice varieties are at the heart of Mone:
- Hyakuden: Celebrated for its rich, full-bodied flavors and elegant finish, bringing depth and warmth to every sip.
- Ichihozumi: A refined rice variety with low protein content, delivering a clean, crisp profile with a delicate sweetness and vibrant acidity.
These premium rice strains are transformed into pure rice sake that allows their natural flavors and aromas to shine. Whether it’s the bold richness of Hyakuden or the refreshing clarity of Ichihozumi, Mone offers an experience like no other.
A Tribute to Akita’s Spirit and Heritage
The name Mone means "sprouting rice shoots," a reflection of Akita Meisho Brewery’s innovative spirit and commitment to preserving Akita’s sake-making traditions. The name also evokes a sense of youthful vitality, symbolizing the brewery’s hope for a thriving future for the region.
Even the packaging tells a story, with a warm, hand-drawn design that captures the beauty of Yuzawa’s ever-changing seasons. The illustrations mirror the brewery’s sincere and dedicated approach to sake-making, from field to glass.
