Sip into History: Kamenoo Phantom Sake Rice Resurrected for Modern Palates
Unveiling the Mystique of Kamenoo Phantom Sake Rice
Embark on a journey through time and taste with Kamenoo, an illustrious sake rice that traces its roots to the enchanting Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture. The captivating tale begins in 1893 when Abe Kameji stumbled upon three resilient ears in a neighboring rice field, defiantly standing tall against the chilling grasp of winter. Through meticulous cultivation and relentless experimentation, Kameji birthed what we now know as Kamenoo. Initially named 'Shinho,' it later adopted the moniker 'Kamenoo,' inspired by a character within the founder's name, evoking the image of a turtle's tail.
The unparalleled quality of Kamenoo spurred its rapid proliferation, particularly in the eastern expanse of Japan. During that period, its fame echoed with the words "Omachi in the west and Kamenoo in the east" for this renowned sake rice. Despite its delectable taste, Kamenoo faced vulnerability to pests, and the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides rendered the rice delicate and unsuitable for modern farming methods. Slowly, it faded into obscurity.
In the 1980s, Norimichi Kusumi, a visionary sake brewer from Washima village in Niigata Prefecture, was stirred by the desire to resurrect Kamenoo. Motivated by the words of a seasoned master brewer, Kusumi invested three years to cultivate enough grains for sake production. The saga of Kamenoo found its way into the hearts of many through the popular Japanese manga "Natsuko no Sake." Today, over a hundred distinctive brands crafted from Kamenoo rice stand as a testament to its revival.
