📅 Why April 23? A Toast to History

On this day in 1516, Germany enacted the Reinheitsgebot, or Beer Purity Law — the first regulation to define beer. 🍺

In 1999, the Craft Beer Association of Japan honored this date by officially naming it Craft Beer Day during the International Beer Cup. It's a day to celebrate brewing artistry, diversity, and the craft beer movement that continues to grow stronger every year in Japan. 🙌

Craft Beer Comes Alive in Japan

Until 1994, beer brewing in Japan was tightly regulated. Only massive producers could legally brew beer, with a minimum output of 2 million liters/year 😲.

That changed when new laws reduced the minimum to 60,000 liters, opening the door for small, independent breweries. And just like that—Japan’s craft beer revolution was born! 🚀

🍶 From Sake to Suds: The Kizakura Story

One of the earliest pioneers was Kizakura Brewery in Kyoto—originally famous for its sake. In 1995, they launched their craft beer business with small 1KL fermentation tanks (still in use today!).

By 2016, demand led them to open a new brewery, Fushimi-gura, with larger 20KL tanks to keep up with thirsty fans.
